OUR ANIMALS
Our grass-fed cattle and pasture pigs are raised on a rotational grazing program throughout our pastures and forest. As our animals graze in certain area only for a short time, it allows for these areas to rest and regenerate naturally, without needing the use of synthetic fertilizers, chemicals or insecticides. This year our pastures will be planted with an annual variety of oat/triticale, peas and rye grasses, using a regenerative practice of no-till seeding. No-till seeding plants the grass seeds, while keeping the soil covered. This process enhances the soils’ water retention capacity and prevents nutrient loss. Better for the land and animals and results in a more nutrient dense and tasty meat for us!
Our cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished here at our farm. Our pastures provide a healthy, mixture of forage (grasses, legumes and forbs and shrubs) where we rotate them throughout the warm growing season. Cattle are naturally equipped to digest these grass mixtures, turning them into high quality protein.
GRASS FINISHED BEEF IS AN EXCELLENT SOURCE OF:
RICH IN ANTIOXIDANT VITAMINS B & E
HIGH IN IRON & ZINC
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS (ALA)
The cattle raised here are fed only on grass and forage. They are free of additional hormones, antibiotics, and soy. Our dry-aged beef is lean and tender – yet juicy and full-flavored!
Our purebred Berkshire and Berkshire mix pigs are born and raised here on the farm. They are hardy and thrive well outside year round, even in here in central Alberta! The piglets are introduced to grass and fresh produce along side their mommas (sows). Once weaned they continue to forage, root and wallow throughout the pastures and forest during the growing season. During the winter months they are given shelter with wood chips and straw bales to burrow into and stay warm. Our pigs are fed home-grown grass bales and supplemented with soy-free grains to maintain their fat coverings. Our pasture pigs’ diet is free of additional hormones, antibiotics and chemicals.
Berkshires pigs originate from England and their meat is highly sought after by chefs and pork connoisseurs around the world. Berkshire pork, also known as kurobuta pork, is a deeper red color (similar to beef), well marbled and known for its succulent, sweet taste.
Our brown hens are housed in a free-run barn where they roam free and able to exhibit their natural habits of exploring, dustbathing, socializing and perching. They are naturally curious and very friendly.
Our hens are provided with a soy-free, wheat based diet, with added flaxseed and vitamins. Our brown eggs are certified Omega-3, with deep golden yolks and are full of nutrients. Interestingly, eggs are one of the few foods to be considered a complete protein- a staple, containing all 9 essential amino acids.
